Old T.V.

This piece belonged to a customer who brought this to us to restore for her husband for the memories.  It is a 1940's TV cabinet that no longer worked but it was the first TV her husband's family owned.  He hung on to it and was stashed away in the basement and didn't want to get rid of it.  She snuck it out one day without him knowing and brought it in to restore it into what looked like a working TV from the front and when you spin it  around on its casters, it would be a hidden bookcase from the rear.

We finished off the insides and built a mahogany face frame around the back edges so it would be a functioning bookcase from the back.  We then refinished the mahogany case and made a fake TV screen behind the glass on the front.  When completed, it really looked like a functioning 1940's TV and sitting on heavy duty casters, you could spin it around and have your bookcase from the rear.  The customer had this done for her husband's suprise Christmas gift.

Subject: RE: TV Cabinet Restoration photos

Well, Mike, you were right.  It was a really nice Christmas present and a wonderful surprise.  My husband was absolutely astounded at the transformation of this old TV shell.  He was greatly moved with your restoration of the cabinet.  He remembered it being a complete extravagance when it was purchased in the 1940s.  His grandparents used it for several years then gave it to his family.  Your work was exquisite and worth every cent.  If you could have seen his astonishment when we brought it out of hiding on Christmas morning.  He talked about it non-stop on the phone to his relatives that day.  It now sits in his office and he alternates seeing the front and the back, thanks to your ingenuity.  Here's proof of a delighted customer!  God bless you and your family in your efforts.  Your efforts are really about creating and keeping memories.
